Man protests proposed 911 center layoffs

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The budget cuts to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department include 23 people with the 911 Dispatch Center. Those people have been told they will be laid off if and when the current proposed budget passes.

That's according to the Winnebago County Sheriff's office. Daniel Kalusa's wife works for the 911 dispatch center. He is protesting in front of the courthouse today, saying the county's move is self-serving.

Kalusa tells us he and his family may be forced to move if his wife is without a job. He believes the cuts will hurt public safety.

"Who knows? It could be somebody in Pecatonica who dials 911 and it could take 15 minutes, 30 minutes, who knows? An hour for someone to get out there. Someone could be dead, you know? That's the effect - that's the biggest effect that this is gonna have. That's the storm that's coming," says Kalusa.

Kalusa says his wife was told about her layoff through by a letter in the mail and has not been offered any severance pay or a letter of recommendation.
