ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) --Volunteers work with Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful's e-waste and metals drive this morning to make sure people dispose of their electronics properly. According to Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful, today's collection was record breaking.
Over 400 people recycle items from cardboard and clothes, to TV's and refrigerators. Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful collects recyclables every weekend. Today was designated for metals and electronics. The organization says today's event was overwhelmingly successful. They say it is against the law to put electronics into landfills. They are working to make sure that doesn't happen.
"We want to keep toxins out of the waste stream. We want to reuse and re-purpose what we can, and we want to extend the life of all of our landfills,” said community relations coordinator for Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful, Martha Byrnes.
Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful allows people to bring their recyclables to multiple recycling centers throughout the stateline every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
