Illinois State Police heighten patrols for New Year's weekend

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Illinois State Police has heightened patrols this weekend to keep major highways safer.

IDOT is joining forces with state and local police as part of the annual drive sober or get pulled over holiday enforcement period. Officers will spend more time on roadways like US 20 conducting more DUI, speeding and distracted driving patrols. They will also conduct more roadside safety checks and seat belt enforcement zones. Over the past five years 46 Illinois drivers have died on the road on New Year’s weekend. 41 percent of those fatal crashes involved alcohol.
