Illinois Organ and Tissue Donor Registry opening to new drivers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) - Beginning in 2018, new drivers will be able to add their names to Illinois' Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

Legislation backed by Secretary of State Jesse White will allow 16 and 17-year-olds to register for the state's registry when they get their driver's licenses.

White says while thousands of Illinoisans wait for a new organ, adding younger drivers could open up new life-saving options.

White says more than 4,500 people are on the waiting list and one person whose organs are donated can save up to 25 lives.
