How school districts protect kids at the bus stop from sexual predators

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- There are more than 500 registered sex offenders living in Rockford and its surrounding communities. With so many spread across the area the chances of one being close to our family is high.

One grandmother contacted 23 News, concerned about kids at the bus stop near her home. A registered sex offender lives a block from the bus stop and she worries many parents don't realize the potential danger nearby.

Adonis Howell says he knew there was one near his home and the kids bus stop, but says this is a good reminder to keep a closer watch over our little ones.

"We do have to pay attention to the smaller details from now on. That just opened my eyes like wow, he's literally this close to me and I just have to deal with it I guess," Howell said.

District 205 says it will not allow a bus stop in front of a sex offender’s house or on the corner of their residence.

Sex offenders have to live more than 500 feet away from a school, but there are no laws regarding how far they live from bus stops.
