ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The Salvation Army in Winnebago County finds a gold coin in one of its kettles.

The Salvation Army says the 1988 1-ounce Canadian gold coin was found in a kettle positioned at the Schnucks on Harlem Road in Loves Park. Leaders say the coin has a face value of $50 but may be worth $1,200.

Money from the Salvation Army kettles goes toward the Christmas assistance program, year-round food assistance as well as other social service programs.

The goal was to raise $240,000 from the kettles this year, however the Salvation Army fell $34,193 short.
