ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The cold weather is keeping emergency room doctors at MercyHealth extremely busy. They say they're seeing more and more people coming in with frostbite.
Dr. Todd Chaffin at MercyHealth, says he treated several people Thursday for frostbite, with most having damage on their hands. Many of them were shoveling snow and running errands without being properly dressed.
"As a matter of fact, I just finished treating one. It was pretty significant. A gentleman with blisters from cold exposure and swelling," says Chaffin.
Dr. Chaffin says hand warmers can provide temporary relief but the best practice is to dress properly and try to cover as much skin as possible.
