Cat killed in DeKalb apartment fire

DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) - One person has non-life threatening injuries following an apartment fire in DeKalb Monday.

The DeKalb Fire Department says the fire started in an apartment's bathroom just after 1:30 p.m. in the 100 block of N. 9th Street.

Fire crews were able to quickly put out the fire and rescue six cats as well as one dog from the building. Crews took one person to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for minor injuries.

One cat was killed in the fire.

Crews say the cause of the fire was accidental from careless use of smoking materials. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

People who lived in the building are being assisted by the American Red Cross along with the property's management.
