ROCKTON, Ill. (WIFR) -- Gary Hansmeier is spending the day remembering his son Todd Hansmeier.
"His friends would tell me he would give you the shirt off his back, even if he didn't have one," said Gary. "Just that kind of kid. Amazing."
Todd was killed four years ago by a friend of his, Terrence Doddy. But Todd's brother Brian didn't want Todd remembered that way.
"With all the bad that happened we wanted to do something good," explained Brian. "We wanted something that would carry on the spirit of Todd, and we though this was the best way to honor him."
Brian uses the Hanz Brew Fest to raise money for a scholarship to give to a Hononegah High School senior each year to help with college.
"It's really an honor because, I never had the opportunity of knowing Todd myself, but I hear he's a great man," explained Alex Maldonado, who received the Todd Hansmeier memorial Scholarship. "To be chosen as someone who demonstrates the qualities he embodied is really great to me."
Brian says he believes more than a thousand people will turn out to not only support a scholarship, but remember a good friend.
"Todd was probably one of my best friends and it really meant a lot for me to honor his life naming my son after him," explained Nicholas Frohmader, a friend of Todd's. "I just hope that my son can grow up to be the kind of guy Todd was."
Gary says he still can't believe how many lives his son touched and wants to honor Todd by raising glass.
