WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockton Township could soon see an asphalt recycling center.
Winnebago County Board members approved a special use permit Thursday night for an asphalt crushing and storage facility at 11184 and 11150 N. Main Road in Rockton.
That decision comes after many people living near the proposed site made it clear that they do not support the idea.
Those neighbors brought up safety concerns about the trucks used at the site. They also are worried about pollution and its effects on wells in the area and on the air near the site.
Board members overwhelmingly approved the special use permit, with Jim Webster, R-District 2, casting the only "nay" vote.
"That's my district. I represent those people in that area. And they've been very upset about anything asphalt for the past year or more. I represent them and had to listen to what they had to say. When they vote you in, you're their voice," Webster said.
Three S Contractor Services was granted the special use permit. The center won't manufacture asphalt, just crush and reuse it. The company did admit to using the proposed site for recycling asphalt for three days without a permit.
