Neighbors of a Rockford CIA agent killed in a suicide bombing last week are mourning her death tonight. Elizabeth Hanson is one of the seven CIA agents killed in a December 30th suicide bombing in Afghanistan. She was working there to track down and eliminate enemy leaders.
A neighbor is flying their flag at half staff on the street where she used to live, while others mourn in their own way. Hanson would have turned 31 next month.
She was part of an intelligence team that gathered data about the militant network in Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to the New York Times, the bomber was brought onto the base as an informant. It was believed that he had information on Al Qaeda's second in command.
Hanson's latin teacher, Sherrilyn Martin from Keith Country Day School, remembers exactly where she sat in class, and read us Hanson's senior quotes, perhaps a reflection of the type of person she was.
"It's a quote from Ursula Le Guin, 'It's good to have an end to journey toward, but it's the journey that matters in the end.' And the other one, 'Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise, seek what they sought.'"
This is a sensitive subject for many of Hanson's neighbors so we were unable to get any of them to talk to us on camera. One neighbor did tell me while they didn't know her that well, they remember her as a very nice person.
We also tried contacting the Hanson family, but no one was home when we were in the neighborhood and our calls weren't returned.
