The Last Gasp of Empire: The Falklands War, presented by Dr. Martin Quirk, RVC Professor of History.
The 1982 Falklands War represented a regression in many ways in modern history. The British embarked on a bold adventure to restore an almost forgotten piece of a largely vanished empire. Their quest seemed more reminiscent of the 19th century than the 20th century. Meanwhile, the Argentines seemed to be equally insistent that raw bravery and military prowess could trump international opinion and the status quo. In the end the Falklands War reveals much about the culture of nationalism and war at that point in history. This presentation will primarily examine the culture and military meaning to be found in the Falklands War.
All lectures are open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments will also be served 30 minutes prior to each lecture start time.
