About halfway through each month, the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center issues an outlook for the upcoming calendar month. Fittingly, around the 15th of May, the national outlook for the month of June was issued. And unfortunately for the Stateline, the news is not all that great.
Even though we're looking forward to a most enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, which could very well include some unseasonable warmth, long term projections are not giving us a whole lot of hope as we look forward to June.
Here's the temperature outlook from the CPC for the month of June.

This outlook is consistent with what has been going on for much of the month of May, with very warm conditions over the Southwest, and a broad trough of low pressure keeping the Great Lakes and the Midwest on the cooler side of things. Apparently the Climate Prediction Center doesn't see any compelling evidence to suggest that this pattern will break in earnest during the month of June. Now by no means is this a guarantee that we'll be colder than normal, it's an educated guess. The areas in white where you see the letters "EC" means Equal Chances....an equal chance of above normal, normal, or below normal. Any area shaded in blue indicates a greater than 33% chance of colder than normal temps. Conversely, any area shaded in orange indicates a greater than 33% of above normal temperatures. The CPC suggests that we have a 40% or greater probability of below normal temps, while its a better than 50% proposition that the desert SW will scorch in the month of June.
So, what about rainfall? Here's the CPC's take.

The Climate Prediction Center believes that we're in store for not only a cooler than normal June, but also a wetter than normal month.
Now just because the big picture isn't all that bright does not mean that the entire month is going to be a lost cause. There will surely be periods of warm, dry weather, and periods of cool, damp weather. But when all is said and done on June 30th, the Climate Prediction Center believes that we'll end up below normal, if only slightly so.
We'll keep a close eye on these projections as time wears on, but in the meantime, let's just look forward to enjoying some nice weather this weekend!
