Severe Weather Threat for Friday

For the second time in a week, the Stateline finds itself under the gun for the potential of severe thunderstorms. Following a round of showers and thunderstorms early this morning, sunshine has broked out in many areas, allowing our temperatures to soar into the mid to upper 70s. While this sun has made things rather enjoyable, it might end up being too much of a good thing, as that sunshine is going to destabilize our environment, and allow for thunderstorms to develop rapidly!

That was the big question going into today...will the sun come out? We knew if we stayed cloudy, our severe weather threat would be minimal...Had we broken into sunshine, our severe weather threat would rise with every minute of sun we saw. As of 3:00 this afternoon, thunderstorms were trying to develop across parts of Eastern Iowa and extreme Northwestern IL. I expect these thunderstorms to become more widespread as we head through the late afternoon hours.

The Storm Prediction Center in Normal, OK chimes in at 3:10 with suggestions that a Tornado Watch may be issued in the near future.

UPDATE: 4:30 PM: TORNADO WATCH ISSUED FOR SOUTHERN WISCONSIN UNTIL 10:00 PM TONIGHT

UPDATE: 6:45PM: Tornado watch cancelled for Green and Rock Counties.

Updates to follow as needed this evening!

A cyclone refers to any area of low pressure. A hurricane is a cyclone, a winter storm is a cyclone, thunderstorms often result from cyclones. Since a tornado is a small, small area of intense low pressure, a tornado is indeed a cyclone. The cyclone you've heard about in Myanmar Monday was a tropical cyclone, comparable to what we would call a hurricane here in the United States.
