I want to comment on the road conditions. When you plow the side streets and don't salt you leave the ice there and it is very hard to drive on.Either salt the side streets or leave the snow on there. All the schools were closed today except for Rockford and Harlem and I don't see why these schools were open.It is a shame when money outways the safty when it comes to our kids but I guess when your sitting behind a desk and don't have to worry about getting into a accident with 60 screaming kids behind you why should you care!!I would rather drive a day in the summer then when the weather is bad like it was today, you still get your money regardless when they go. |

Wow! Those roads out there are terrible! Be on the look out for deer, I almost hit one SEVENTY-THREE TIMES on the way home from work. This is not a joke. The roads are very icey, and watch out for deer. Thank you. On behalf of all of Stillman Valley: Mark Henderson is fat. Posted by: Deb Location: Rockford The bus drivers do excellent work and should be get an award for all their work. I think any one who thinks it is easy to drive in that weather expecially a bus should drive a bus in that weather. So superintendent try it in the snow and ice. Yes they can do it, they do it all the time but if every school district is close what makes Rockford think the parents want our kids to go. It really dosn't make since. They didn't want a day off just safty for the kids they drive, I didn't even send my kids on the 10th because of the windchill, too cold to stand at the bus stop. I remember what it felt like and can't put my kids through that. Won't send them today either bad windchill today again Posted by: Marvin Location: Rockford School closings being put on local bus drivers, who care about the safety of the children in this bad weather. The question I would have to ask is, why the district did not call off the school day, and instead waited until 6 am on Wed. to announce the closing and post on their site "Due to a large number of reported absences among bus drivers, all schools in the Rockford School District will close today. Administrative offices will remain open." Not only does this put me in a upset state of mind, but leaves me to question the intent of or district. Putting all the students, teachers, and faculty at risk, but also leaving parents w/no time to make the proper arrangements for their children. I commend the unity of or local bus drivers. Thank you. Posted by: m Location: rockford Well lets see what they do tomorrow, have them kids stand in that cold and them drivers drive when the roads are going to be slippery Posted by: Dist.205 bus driver Location: rockford The winn. court house was closed today but they was going to have school. The news say stay inside today but its ok to send your kid to the bus stop.Something wrong with this picture. Posted by: Tanya Location: Rockford The superintendent want to blame us bus drivers for schools closing, well school should of been closed in the first place. The side roads are bad but they look at the main roads and thats it,we dont drive on main roads. We saved them money cause do you know how many accidents the buses would of had,or got stuck. Its a drivers biggest fear is to slide into a kid waiting for the bus.We all know them kids dont listen we they are told to stay back til the bus is stopped.Every school around us was closed but us.Noone is worried about these kids saftey but us bus drivers.I would like to see her get out there and drive a bus on a day like today.Maybe then they will think about us next time the weather is bad. Posted by: Doug Location: Northern IL This nothing to do with snow removal but my question is this. Why does IDOT wait until Sept or Oct to do major road repairs. ie Il 251 is closed between Il 72 and Il 64 for 2 months because they are replacing 2 large culverts. Now they had the months of June, July and part of Aug. to get this done. Why wait until school starts so that the buses have to change bus routes which leaves the kids on the buses longer? Posted by: Dixie Location: Rockford,IL Potter Street in Rockford, has been neglected for so long it is a permanent lake, Tuesday morning after the rain a pickup truck was stuck in the mud so badly, it took a tow truck to remove it. Efforts to contact our alderman Lenny Jackobson have been in vain. Lenny asked us for our Vote at a neighborhood watch meeting before the election, and we put signs in our yards to help him with his re election because he assured us the drainage issue as well as the road would be repaired early spring. I emailed him on Tuesday. It is Thursday and I have not yet had a reply from Mr.Jacobson. Posted by: Marie Location: Rockford I agree with Tony. You still slide even if you are going slow.Does anyone know how hard it is to stop a bus while it is sliding and out of control? It is worse then a car sliding.I don't know anything that can drive or stop on ice!Maybe one of your kids is on that bus.I have heard people say go ahead and slide down the hill. You must be out of your mind if you think I am gonna slide down a hill in a bus. There is alot of roads that are bad.I have been in Rockford for 16 years and they have never repaved Harrison Ave,maybe fixed the potholes which didn't help.I figure you have to live on the rich side of town before they will fix the roads, plow and salt them.North main Street is a mess and needs to be repaved but I guess other streets are first like perryville.People drive worse in the winter then they do in the summer. They follow too close and cut people off or run the stop arm of a bus. Posted by: Jay Location: rockford This is the midwest and we get snow, so learn how to drive in it. Just beacuse there is snow and ice on the ground does not give anyone the right to blow stop signs/lights. There are drivers that don't even attempt to stop. If you are that affraid to drive in this weather, either don't drive or move south where there is no snow. Just drive smart. I agree with Charlie, stay off the phone. Posted by: Charlie Location: Chana You are right Steve and when the weather is rough GET OFF THE PHONE! there is nothing so pressing on the phone that you need to put yourself or others in danger! shut it off till you get to where your going (ARIVE ALIVE!!!) Posted by: BUTC H Location: ROCKFORD I will bet that the ALPINE rd. improvements won't last very long. We should thank all of our state legislators for that. It has only been 10 years since we had a road improvement plan. Let us re-elect these bums some more times. With politicians, it only counts on how often you get elected. Both parties are to blame for this mess. Unfortunately, in politics it is one way, or no way. Posted by: John Location: Loves Park I sympathize with Jim from Rockford. But we've known about the condition of sections of Alpine road for years. Jim, have you tried slowing down on those sections? Posted by: jim Location: rockford STREET CONDITION POT HOLES AND CRADERS WHAT IS HAPPING TO OUR 1 0/0 SALESI DON'T SEE ANY ROAD REPAIR DONE THE STREET ARE STILL THE SAME OLD WAY ALPINE ROAD IS A DISGRACE IT WAS NEVER DON'T RIGHT WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR MY FRONT END ALGINMENT AND 2 NEW TIRES FOR MY PICK UP THE CITY WANTS THE SALES TAX'S BUT DO WE GET OURS MONEY WORTH NO WE DONT THEY HIRE THESE CO.;S TO DO THE WORK SO WHAT HAPPING TO OUR STREETS THEY LOOK LIKE A WAR ZONES SHELLS HITTING THE PAVEMENT SO WHO SHOULD PAY FOR THE DAMAGES ,I THINK THE CITY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGES THANK YOU Posted by: marquetta alexander Location: rockford I wonder why, when the city fixed the Whitman St. bridge it didn't continue on to Sixth st. to East St. It is a shame to drive on. It has so many potholes it is unbelievable and when the city call themselves patching them, they don't level it enough and that makes it just as bad and they don't patch all of the holes. I know people see and drive on it, it's right there near the blood bank. I guess it's not a concern for some, but not me, I'm sick of it so I go the other way, and it's an inconvenience. Street People please do a better job and fix that area, it's awful!!!! Posted by: Tony Hinrichs Location: Rockford We live on the 400 block of South Day St and when snow is compacted on street I can't go north (which is up a slight hill) and have to slide back and go over to Horace which is a city bus route street and better plowed. I have learned to not even try going up the hill. I have a small front wheel drive car, but I have seen District 205 buses spin their wheels and slide backwards trying to go north from Green and South Day. My thought is that the city might consider letting snow plowers know what streets the school buses take and having them do extra salting of difficult hills so school buses don't have to dangerously slide back and have to go in reverse for over a block to be able to turn on Green to get to Horace. Or possibly school bus pick up sites need to be changed when it snows if the city can't make the streets driveable. Posted by: Steve Location: Mt.Morris People just need to be better drivers and don't be in such a hurry Slow Down!! Posted by: Tim Location: Loves Park Yes,it's snowing! It's suppose to snow...It's December!!Hello Mcfly is their anybody home? Posted by: Anonymous I really dont think the schools will be in and you should take a day off work due to such bad weather. Posted by: Pete I would of thought we could afford plenty of salt with the 1 percent tax raise. Surely that money is not all spent because I sure don't see that many roads repaired as of yet. I know I was waitting all year for my pot holes to get repaired. Posted by: amanda Location: ogle county Roads are horrible and ice covered..... winds are whipping ppl all over the road |
