Regarding The Use Of Online Health Information
I can tell you exactly why more people are using WebMD instead of going to a doctor. $$$$$!! Health insurance is outrageous, doctors insurance is outrageous, visits to a doctor are outrageous! Who wants to spend an hour or more waiting to see a doctor to be told "Oh, you have a virus. Stay warm, rest, drink fluids, if you're not better in 7 to 10 days - come back". On top of that, doctors have shorter hours (office hours) than the average working public so you have to lose a day of work or a portion of day to be told 'nothing can be done - it will pass in a week to 10 days' - and then pay for that!

Medical expenses, prescriptions, insurance, it's all out of control. Way too expensive. I don't blame anyone for trying to figure out what's wrong on their own and do self treatment. Some people who are fortunate enough to have health insurance can't afford the high deductable either so they'll only go to a doctor if they feel like they're at death's door.
It's all about money, just like everything else these days. You can't afford to see a doctor, you're lucky if you can afford fuel to get back & forth to work and still have money left to pay your bills.

Beware the information you receive! I am a journalist, and we were taught strict rules on getting good, reliable information that could be backed by reputable scientific studies and could be confirmed by several sources. Drug companies and other people selling machines/services/vitamins/etc/etc will think up very official-sounding names and publish to the internet any garbage they decide to write. NO ONE is controlling this information!! I usually turn to national publications, newspapers, etc. for my info--but there is also a problem there. Although I trust the research and reputability of the writers of national magazines, I am noticing a constant flux in the information coming out about the health field. I.e., "drink at least 8 glasses of water a day"--no, wait, you only have to drink 4! The problem with getting information and having it refuted later is that you stop trusting information in general. I am very concerned about this topic--anyone else out there?

Just remember that on line health web sites are just for info and a lot of illnesses have some of the same symptons and only a Doctor can give you the proper treatment you may need.

Posted by: Anonymous Yep! i use WEB MD all the time. The simple fact of the matter is that it is quicker, easier, and in some cases far less embarrassing to go online and treat yourself than it is to deal with a doctor.

Posted by: wilma I agree with you. You can always move to Canada, France, or London because they have free medical and the scripts are cheap !!! You can go to Crusader Clinic or you can sign up for charity assistance with osf and I think swedish american. If you don't make enough money they will pay for all your dr. visits or a percentage.
