I saw on the news that they may now tear down the building and build new at a cost of 7.2 million, yes it was a tragedy but you don't rebuild, I don't see stores or malls or restaurants were someone was murdered torn down and rebuilt, we'd have to rebuild the whole country under that premise.

Posted by: Student at NIU Location: Dekalb
I experienced the events of this day in the building next door and wanted to share my thoughts. As for Va Tech, 2nd Fl of Norris Hall (where the shootings occured) are in fact not being used right now for anything other than some storage. I visited and volunteered on their campus last month during their anniversary and was informed on the use of the floor. As for Cole Hall, I strongly feel that the oppinion should be left up to the Faculty and Staff, Students, Alumni, and Donars as President Peters has done. My initial thought was why not tear it down, create a memorial, and erect a new lecture hall in the name of those lost? But, if the general consensus is to keep the building, then thats what should be done. Maybe a student lounge and study area named after those lose and affected would be in order? I do ask one thing, as those of us who have been impacted by this tragedy from Rockford and elsewhere, please keep your comments respectful and sensitive to the events.

Posted by: ted Location: amboy
they should just leave cole hall as it is. the problem is basicly like a car accident. they dont tear the road out and build another.

Posted by: Sue Location: Loves Park
I just want to post a quote from Bobby Kennedy: "What has violence ever accomplished, what has it ever created? Violence breeds violence, retaliation breeds retaliation, and only a cleansing of our whole society can remove this sickness from our souls. For when you teach a man to hate and to fear his brother, when you teach that he is a lesser man because of his color, or his beliefs or the policies that he pursues, when you teach that those who are different from you threaten your freedom or your job or your home or your family, then you also learn to confront others not as fellow citizens, but as enemies. Our lives on this planet are too short, the work to be done is too great. But we can perhaps remember, that those who live with us are our brothers, that they share with us the same short moment of life that they seek as do we, nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and in happiness." I think it would be a good idea for every teenager in school to watch "Bobby".

I agree that they should make a memorial to remember the loss of all the students but leave cole hall because yes it cost more to tear down & rebuild than it does just to remodel the hall

Posted by: Sharon Location: Rockford
Ithink it should be up to the students, after all it's their school.

Posted by: Kathy Location: Rockford
I attended NIU, as did my son, who graduated in 2006. How about doing a remodel of the inside of Cole Hall instead of a more expensive tear-down and rebuild. A space where the tragedy took place could be designated as a chapel for those who would like a memorial and a place to reflect.

Posted by: david Location: rockford
I can feel for people that have lost loved ones. It is very disturbing. But I do not feel The school should expect tax payers to fund and replace the cole bulding. That is not smart. It is allso questionable..

Posted by: Brenda Location: Polo
IL taxpayers do not need to pay for Cole Hall to be torn down and replaced. How about just turning the immediate room/area where the shootings took place into a memorial area and the rest of the building being used for offices and the current museum. If the building needs a little updating fine, but don't tear it totally down if it is still a viable building. I can understand why no one would want to sit in the building for classes like before, so change it into something else as long as a portion of it remains as a tribute to the ones who lost their lives in this tragedy. It seem to me that this would be a win win solution for everyone.

Posted by: Candice Location: DeKalb, IL
If Virginia Tech manages to use the building that their tragedy happened in, then NIU should be able to also. They could re-purpose the hall, but to tear it down seems extravagant and unnecessary.

Posted by: Sadie Location: Forreston
I know I might be late with my idea but hopefully not to late. I think the Cole Hall at NIU should be converted into a memorial hall. My idea is that miner remodeling should be done inside, and that paintings, pictures , and valuable history from past years at NIU should be put inside this building. I feel that destroying the building will not make what has happened go away and that we should all remember what has happened and who it has happened to. If you would consider giving/sending my idea to whom it may concern at Cole Hall I feel I could possible help this situation.

Posted by: Ann Location: Rockford
Cole Hall has more than classrooms. It houses the anthropology museum collection and lab. Moving the collection will be very expensive. More study needs to be given to the decision to demolish the building.

Posted by: Dan Location: Machesney Park
The state cannot affort to tear down Cole. The state is already in the RED. IDOT doesn't blow up a section of I 90 when there is a terrible accident on the road? Do we bulldoze a house when there is a violent death because of domestic violence? This reaction if politically motivated.

Posted by: kathy Location: Freeport
Tearing down the building, will not erase the momory. it will be stead fast forever to those that lived through it. Build a memorial of the lost and move on. Just believe they are in a better place. $40 Million is alot to tear down a perfectly good building when the state cant afford salt for the roads or better yet, money to fix them.

Posted by: Alicia Knight Location: Stillman Vally
why would you tare down Cole Hall, why?

Posted by: Alicia Knight Location: Stillman Vally
why would you tare down Cole Hall, I think that it would be wrong to tare it down

Posted by: Mary Location: Freeport
Yes, I agree, the shooter was mentally ill obviously. I don't know the building that this tragedy took place but I wonder if someone should use the Amish as an example when they had a tragedy in their little school? The bulldozed the building and planted grass.

Posted by: Tom Location: Rockford
I worked in Cole Hall from 1986 - 1996, in the auditorium where the shootings occured. My heartfelt condolences to the students and familys involved. From the students I've talked to from NIU, I have to agree that cole should be demolished, and a memorial put in it's place. Leaving the building would just keep reminding staff & students of the tragedy.

Posted by: Kelly Location: Mount Morris. IL
This is so awful. I cannot believe that in a few years that will be my children in a public school. It makes me want to home school them and never leave them alone. why do people have to do these awful things to innocent people?

My husband works at NIU as a janitor. We were deeply grieved by what happened and we too have lost a son at the age of 24 and know how a parent suffers any loss but a loss that seems senseless is very hard to live through without faith so we will pray for you and your families at a time when you may not be able to just yet. We also pray for the young man who did these things. Forgiving is the only way to move on. We are so sorry. The Halsey's of Amboy, Il. our prayers will remain with you.

Posted by: Charles Rupcich Location: Rockford
No words of mine can give any comfort to the friends and families of the victims. I hope that people realize that violence and anger take place in everyday lives, moderate to severe. Please love one another, that is the greatest thing anyone can do for each other. May the Holy Father give peace to you and your families.

Posted by: Charles Rupcich Location: Rockford
If you change the purpose that the Hall was intended for, you might as well give in to the lasting memory of the violence. People should not give in to terrorism. Giving memorials for the victims is one thing, but leaving a lasting impression for the cause only creates more violent act for the history they believe they are creating. Which is one of the reasons they act on the violence in the first place. To get there message out, any means necessary. Don't change what the hall was intened for, if you do, he won.

Posted by: Kayla Location: Mt.Morris IL
My heart is with all of the victims families it is just so scary to think that so close to home a horrible event has happened that will scar many for a very long time if not forever. Im only in sixth grade ,but things like this get you thinking about your future.

Posted by: Katie Bodine Location: Rockford, IL
I am still praying and keeping you all near my heart! I sad that these kids died but just remember God loves everyone anh they are in a much better place now!

As a parent of a freshman at NIU, our daughter has been put in two terrible situations, first dealing with the bomb threats during finals in December and with the shooting on Valentines Day. It's hard as a parent as you want your child to go to college and enjoy the experience but this certainly isn't what we signed up for. What's the alternative, quit and working at a mall where she'd have the same risks. No Way! We have to stand up to terrorism and these risks and live each day to the fullest. We're quite thankful for the outpouring of love and concern from family, friends and the community. I'm sure each and every student realizes the significance of this shooting and is dealing with it in their own way. However, the media needs to back off a little so these students can move forward with their lives and education. God's Blessings.

I pray that God will continue to comfort you all.

Every once in a while there is something that happens that makes you realize that your problems are insignificant. That is what I felt when I heard of the shootings at NIU this past Valentine's Day. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone at the school.

Still stunned by this surreal tragedy, still crying at the senseless loss of these young people, still praying for all of us. Longing for healing and spring.

Posted by: john Location: genoa,il
as i drove to work that morning i enjoyed the tremendous sunrise, not ever knowing how this day would change so many lives. i carried my work day as i normally do as did the students of NIU. on the way home that night i drove through the NIU campus this is the way i travel each day. as i saw all the emergency vehicles coming to help i began to pray for whatever was happening. i listened on the radio and was deeply saddended by what i was hearing. as i left town and was at approaching route 64 my attention was drawn to the sky to the west. it was cloudy that day but for a brief moment the clouds allowed the sun to shine through i tried to stop but there was to much traffic behind me. as the sun shined through for that brief moment i was assured that these precious young people were safe and in a better place. God Bless

On behalf of Mason Properties, I would like to say, "Our thoughts & prayers go out to the families, friends, students, & staff affected by the recent tragedy at Cole Hall. May God Bless you and keep you all at this your hour of need."

Posted by: Brad Location: Rockford
Had Illinois had a right to carry law and there had been a couple of people in the room that could shoot back there would have been less people killed or hurt. Or maybe even NONE because the shooter may have thought twice about going on his shooting spree. He knew it was a defenceless environment.!!

Posted by: Robynn Location: Rockford
My condolences to every one at the school, and the families of the victims. This is not something they will forget easily. But time will heal. God Bless you all.

Posted by: Glory Location: Red Oak, Illinois

As an alumn I was devastated that this could happen at NIU. My heartfelt sorrow and hopes that you can come to grip with this awful tragedy in your life.

I grew up in DeKalb and can't believe that something like this could happen in my hometown. NIU is such a nice campus and in my years of growing up spent much time there and even worked there for a time. My heart goes out to the victims and families of this tragedy. DeKalb is such a nice town and this is a black mark on the community. I hope that everyone can get past this and continue to enjoy all that DeKalb has to offer.

MY HEART & PRAYERS ARE WITH EVERYONE AT NIU AND THEIR FAMILIES. YOU HEAR ABOUT SHOOTINGS ALL THE TIME BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS SO CLOSE TO HOME, THAT MAKES IT EVEN MORE UNBEARABLE. I HEAR PEOPLE STATING, "I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN HERE, AND IT DID." GOD BESS EVERYONE.

Whose great idea was it to have a blood tear on the husky?!?! Its a sad thing that happened,. And I am planning to go to NIU, but I find the tear tasteless as blood, do it as an actual tear or an outline but the blood.....no

My heart goes out to each person at NIU, especially the victims and their families. We are so saddened by this tragedy, and keep asking ourselves how could this happen again? To the victims families keep your faith in God and look to him for strength and let Him heal your heart. We don't know what to say about the shooter except for the fact he had no right to take the lives of innocent people who did nothing to him! Our prayers are with NIU and all students and faculty. This will forever be a tragedy in Dekalb Illinois. Jack and Linda Grimes

I graduated from NIU over 40 years ago and still have great memories of those days. We are one extended family and need to always treat each other like it could be our last day together. Life passes quickly. Let your family and friends know that you care, especially now.

Posted by: Theresa Location: mchenry, il
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone at N.I.U. and their families! Please know that you are not alone!

Posted by: Jean My prayers and thoughts are with the students and faculty of NIU. My son attends school there, however he did not know the victims or the injured. We all feel the loss and grieve with each of you. I am very impressed by the rapid response of all involved to protect the other students, the response of EMS personnel, the conduct of each and every person in the news conferences. I appreciate you all very much. One never expects this to happen and the professionalism, the caring, the courage of each and every one of you deserves more than can be said by two small words--THANK YOU.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Roscoe
I want to thank all of YOU for your support. The outpouring of support has been a tremendous help to the kids on campus. Local businesses have gone out of their way to help, delivering free pizza and providing safe houses for the kids who have no where to go. Many of the kids have gone home to the safety of their parents, however there are plenty of kids who do not have that option. There are international students, and kids who are part of the DCFS program who do not have a family to turn to. My daughter Krystle, is a community advisor at NIU and is staying behind with them. Although I experienced the horror of "not knowing" for a period of time, and wanted to immediately bring her home, I understand why she is compelled to "be there" for her fellow huskies, and I am tremendously proud of her. She's already earned her wings here on earth.

Posted by: Rona Location: DeKalb
I was at Niu that horrible day. I was luckily not in Cole when the shooting started. I have lived in DeKalb my hole life and have been a student at NIU for a year and a half. This is devistating to all of us here. For the students that were injured and their families, all of our thoughts and prayers are with you. I am still in shock over what happened but with in 15 minutes of the shooting I received 6 calls and 4 text's from friends and family that were making sure I was okay. This is a horrible tragedy but our community is strong and we will be there for one another during this difficult time. I also believe all the support coming in from everywhere is greatly appreciated.

Posted by: Karen Location: Belvidere
The message and music at the end of the news with the Huskie (and the tear) was very appropriate...thank you for all the information you have shared in a very emphathetic way.

Posted by: Candice Location: Pecatonica, IL
Wishing the NIU families, students and faculty hope, comfort and peace in this time of sorrow and uncertainty. Please remember the family and friends of Steve Kazmierczak in your thoughts and prayers. There are those who will feel the need to blame and ostrasize those who loved and cared about him. But they too have suffered a painful loss. What a horrible feeling it must be to know their own child caused such sorrow to others. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Candice

My heart and prayers goes out to those who were affected by this tragedy. We are NIU,don't forget that.We got to be strong during this time.

Posted by: Delauna Location: Rockford, Il,
My thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone affected by this tragedy. It was sad hearing about it before but this one just touches me deeply in my heart because it was so close to home. My daughter is nine years old and she said to me, "mommy I hope I never have to go to college." Now how do we respond to that? College is something we want our kids to experience. But can we trust it? Sending them away? There really isn't an answer because I'm sure there's no way to prevent such actions from happening. I just hope there is an end to the madness.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Polo Il.
Prayer's from our family to all of you affected by this terrifying event.

Posted by: James Location: Ohio
Everytime, this kind shooting happens, we pray, journalists report, politician speak, then couple weeks later, all forgotten, untill next time shooting again, then we wake up again and pray, news, politician talk, then we forget again, then next time another shooting ...... When will this nation do away with guns? well, of course, someone will jump out say: "gun doesn't kill, people kill", fine lets get back to the circle, and hope it is always someone else kids, not my kids get shot next time. That is all we can do.

Posted by: Mark Location: Loves Park
I am a 2003 graduate of NIU. Let me start by saying this incident seems so unreal to me. My heart goes out to the people who were affected by this tragic event. I've had classes in Cole Hall and it is set up much like a movie theater, meaning that the people in that hall were pretty much "sitting ducks", not only that, but the shooter waited until the last 15 minutes of a rather long class, knowing that students become rather lethargic and take 5 to 10 minutes to get moving again. It is obvious to me that although the shooter was rather unbalanced, he had a clear plan of action and knew exactly what he was doing. That scares me, but what really scares is fact that people with extensive mental histories can get guns so easily. Until this problem is addressed shootings like the one at NIU and at Virginia Tech will keep happening.

Posted by: Lynn Location: Ashton
As a former employee, my heart goes out to everyone at NIU, and to those who are victims of violent crimes everywhere. We all need to take care of one another as we hurdle through our lives. Indeed, we are all in this together.

Posted by: Cheryl Location: Rockford, IL
My heart goes out to all families of the victims that were involved. As a parent, it is the worst nightmare coming through, you can help your students or all children by being there and letting them talk and help them decide when they can go back and not force the issue. The response time was remarkable, and I am sure that maybe the next step will be locked doors and bar codes for students to get in to all buildings. I know the dorms at SIU have the card entry system. My family's thoughts are with everyone as well. We all need to wrap our arms and prayers around NIU because we are all affected, even if we weren't physically there at Cole Hall on Thursday.

Posted by: valerie Location: rockford ill
my prayers are going out to all the families and friends too.

Posted by: Carolyn Location: Rockford
Oh! MY God!! No I could not believe this was happening again. My prayers are with all the family members and to the students that were in the class room at the time of the shooting. Bless you all at NIU. Keep the faith and continue to excel in spite of it all. You must and you can go on. God is with you every step of the way. God bless and keep you all now and forever.

My thoughts and prayers are out to all of the family members of the NIU attack. On that day...people Nationally and Internationally were part of the small communitty of DeKalb, IL. What has this world coming to? Why is this happening to everyone around the world? I'm thinking of a song and all I know is this line, "Its the end of the world as we know it." But still, even though this shooting took place. This, I think have helped strengthen the ties of helpfulness, and morning around the globe. Like I said before, my thoughts and prayers are with all the families that were involved in the shootings, friends and students of NIU, all the international families, and all the families that were not part of the shooting. On that 14th day of Feburary; that, I think, has helped DeKalb embrace and is a lot stronger than before. Just like the VT shootings in Virginia, but both colleges, are rising from the ashes and starting a new page of traditions, and support in the schools.

I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE IS A CHURCH GROUP THAT IS GOING TO PICKET THE DEAD STUDENTS FUNERAL SERVICES, MY DAUGHER CALED THEM AND SOMEONE THAT ANSWERED CONFIRMED IT, SAYING THAT GOD SENT THE SHOOTER TO CLEANSE THOSE STUDENTS OF THERE SINS. WHAT THE HECK IS THIS NATION COMMING TO? I HOPE SOMEONE DOESN'T BURN THEM DOWN!, OR CREATE ANYMORE VIOLENCE...

As an NIU student, its so hard to believe something like this could happen. Its heartbreaking and we can't begin to thank everyone for the prayers. Please continue to keep the families of the victims in your prayers. Huskies-- We can overcome even the darkest moments. Has anyone brought up the point that Steven Kazmierczak was a teaching assistant in that very room??? the teacher he was the assistant for had class every semester at the same time that the shooting occurred, is there some kind of coincidence?

I live in DeKalb. My husband and I are members of the Huskie Club at NIU. My father, sister and daughter all graduated from NIU. My son hopes to attend NIU and his girlfriend was in that class, she left at 2:45 to get her Mom a valentine card before going to work. I stood in my livingroom crying, watching the ambulances race the wounded to the hospital, praying that our skilled physicians and nurses at Kishwaukee Hospital would be able to help them all. I recognized the faces of our police force on national news with the back drop being my town. My heart broke with the news of the loss of innocent lives, and it grieves for their families. What the shooter did not know was how strong this community is. We will remain strong. Hug your children, your families, tell them that you love them and most of all have a relationship with them, spend time with them and know them, this is the only way to prevent this. The responsibility is ours. 1 Corinthians 15:51~55

May God hold all victims, students, parents, friends, and NIU staff safely in His loving arms during this darkest hour for NIU.

NIU staff and classmates need each other now-and everyone at NIU is in my thoughts and prayers. We all will surive this tragic time but we will NEVER forget it.......

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the NIU students and their families. I would like to bring up the security at the campus here. How can a non NIU student just walk onto the campus and enter any building? I have worked in Chicago, and many places in Rockford where a badge with a bar code was needed to gain any access to any building's external doors. Why is this practice not followed? There may be ways to get around this preventive measure but at least its a line of defense, a deterrent to these kinds of tragedies.

What a horrific, sorrowful day with a disastrous conclusion. Our condolences to all those affected by this senseless tragedy.

I am a graduate student who currently commutes to NIU. I don't know anyone who was harmed during this tragedy, but I am deeply sorry for those who have had loved ones lost or harmed. That being said, I would like to commend NIU on the way that they handled this issue. I was on the fourth floor of the psychology/computer science building when I heard about this from one of the professors. NIU's response to this was immediate. The professors/administrators did everything they could to be safe, and you could tell that they had prepared for such an event. This horrible incident could have happenned anywhere, but the way that NIU handled it makes me feel as though I am in good hands as a student of NIU. I will always remember this horrible event, but at the same time I look forward to returning to school with the comforting thought that NIU is there for me.

This is sad for many reasons, one obvious reason is that shootings are NEVER pretty, let alone joyous... and two; it happened on Valentine's Day, a day where it supposed to show love... not hate.

I'm echoing the prayers of many other posters here. I'd like to add that the coverage WIFR provided of this tragedy was very complete, thank you. High five to ANDY who managed to work his way through the 40 minutes of air-space while awaiting the press conference this morning.

I have to say I was completely shocked when I saw the news about the shooting. My heart goes out to everyone at NIU and I will continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers. I commend the law enforcement for having a plan in place for such events. It's just very tragic that they actually had to put that plan to use. I hope that the NIU families know that this area and our nation are grieving right along with them. If only we can stop the tragedies. College is a time for fun and education. Not a time to be running from cold blooded killers in a lecture hall. Hopefully, the students involved will be able to get past this tragedy. May God bless you and keep all of you in the palm of His hand during this tough time. To those that perished, you may be gone, but you will NEVER be forgotten. To those that were injured, may your physical injuries heal quick and your hearts heal in time.

My condolences to all. I'd like to say first how impressed I am with the NIU police and their prompt response in this emergency. I applaud you. Second, the President of NIU, my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you. You're an example to all the kind, sensative and real men of this world. You've given your students, staff and those around you your strength in a time of need. And finally, the response of all the police, paramedics, law enforcement and public who arrived on the scene of such a tragic magnitude. You all need to be proud. I'm proud knowing the security you have given us. To all the students, you are brave, you are strong. And their are things in our lifetime that happen that we just do not understand. You will get through this. Allow others to help you, and help others. NIU will revive, will triumph, and we will remember those who lost their lives on February 14th, 2008. God Bless all of you!

My thoughts & prayers go out to everyone in the Dekalb community. No matter how we try to prevent these tragedies and protect our children, these things happen. People can't think this won't happen to them. It can happen anywhere, anytime. I'm glad that NIU took the time to train and have their plans for such an emergency in place. Again my sympathies are extended to everyone involved.

As a former Northern Illinois student and a graduate, I'm just sitting here stunned right now and am sick to my stomach. I graduated 20 years ago but this hits home like I just left yesterday. Most of my classes were in the buildings right next to Cole Hall, so I know exactly where this is. My friends' kids that go to NIU are safe, so we're thankful for that. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims' families and to the entire "Huskie Family" at NIU.

Posted by: Jeff Location: Janesville
My heart goes out to everyone at NIU in this tragic and horrific time. I went to school at NIU for one year and still consider myself a Huskie. I know how close the DeKalb/Sycamore and the entire stateline community is, and we will all pull together to get through this tragic time. The thought of this happening here is just so hard to comprehend. My prayers are with everyone involved, the victims of this senseless tragedy and their families, students and staff and all of NIU.

My heart goes out to then entire NIU community esp. the victims of a senseless shooting, it is sad to see the day when students can't be safe at schools, a place they go to better themselves, what a tradegy.

Posted by: Nancy Location: Poplar Grove
As an NIU alum this hits home--it's family even though I don't know any of the students personally. It's been 40 years since I sat in a lecture hall at NIU but can only imagine the terror that the students endured during those few terrifying minutes. My thoughts and prayers are with the all NIU students and families.

Posted by: Dan Location: Rockford,IL
I've not heard much, if any, discussion about NIU being a "gun-free" zone. Of course, prayers and sympathy to the victims' families and may God have mercy on the shooter.

Posted by: Shirley Location: Dekalb, Illinois
I find it in poor taste to display the shooters name along with the students who lost their life in the horrific event. Out of respect for the friend, family and our community please remove his name from the list. My prayers are out to all.

I do not go to NIU, but I live near campus. For my job, I have been working closely with the athletic staff @ NIU for years. I am deeply saddened and frightened by this series of events. It strikes a nerve when it is so close to home. My thoughts and prayers are with the vitims and their families during this terribly difficult time. God bless you all. Please be strong.

I am a student of that specific class where the shooting took place yesterday. I, thankfully & fortunately, cut that class yesterday because wanting to get on the road a little earlier to go see my girlfriend for Valentine's day in Minnesota. My thoughts & prayers are with all of the victims & their families, as well as any of the affected kids. I also encourage everyone to count their own blessings today & everyday. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Since so many of our local students attend NIU after high school this situation hits close to home. We still need to look at our own security network. I have a daughter who graduated from NIU with a masters in geology who is teacher now at Stillman High School and I know this is someting that she will be thinking about. My youngest is in college at JJC and she is worried about her friends that attend NIU. May we all come together in this time of grief and pray for those who are injured and for the families of ALL.

I am really sick and sadden by this horrific event. It's should of never happened to this campus. I pray and wish all the best for all the students and staff. God be with you all. My son graduated there last spring, and I am very proud of his success. I wish all the students there that they will not quit, but keep on striving towards their dreams of becoming what they want to be. Don't give up just because of one person who did disrupt their lives. Keep on going. Pray that this does not happen again. Take care.

This type of killings have to stop. Colleges have thousands of people. We are fighting terriosm everyday, there has to be a way to stop a person going into a lecture hall and shooting innocent people. To me it doesn't make sense. Authorities need to start taking threats more seriously.

I just wanna say sorry to the family who lost a love one and too all the students at NIU sorry you going threw this tragedy!!! May god be with you all!

What a shocking and tragic situation. My thoughts and prayers are with every NIU student and staff, the victims as well as their parents and the family of the shooter. I would like to thank Nichole Vrsanky for her excellent coverage of this terrible event. You handled yourself with grace, dignity and great compassion which is something we often don't see in local media.

Posted by: Dianna Location: Dixon, IL
I cannot even begin to imagine what each and every student at NIU is going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We keep hearing this shooting compared to all of the others, how was the response time compared to other shootings. It is sickening. Lets stop blaming law enforcement, and blame the person at fault, the shooter! All of the news channels are saying they will released the shooters identity at 9:00. Why doesn't someone say, we are NOT going to release the name of the shooter. Why give him the satisfation of knowing that everyone knows his name, knows his pain. Let's focus on the injured and the deceased. Maybe if others thinking of re-creating this scene know that they will never have their "15 minutes of fame" they won't do it! Who cares what his name is! Can I ask why the shooter is counted in the number of victims killed? Are we trying to add the numbers to "out do" the last shooting? Don't count him, he doesn't deserve to be counted. Thank You.

It just seems so unreal that something like this could happen HERE. You really don't know what it's like until you are worrying about your friends or family that may or may not have been injured or killed. It's just crazy and hard to accept, but it's very real. It makes you realize that anything can happen, anywhere, at any time. I don't even know what to think about it besides that it was a terrible event and all we can do is pray for those killed, injured, or affected in any way by the shooting.

My thoughts and Prayers go out to the families and friends of all of the ppl involved, including the family of the gunman, (they now must live with the effects of this horror as well).
